41 Club VE DAY 75 – Ypres Rally
May 9 - May 11
We aim to drive across to Belgium taking National President Peter to meet up with the Association’s fellow International Presidents and their Members in Ypres making it a truly international community event to share continued fellowship and friendships.
The finale to the weekend’s celebrations being at 8pm local time on Sunday evening when those attending will experience the ‘playing of the last post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate and then on to a celebratory meal where the toast will be to ‘continued International Fellowship’.
A message from Event Organiser, Bruce Bennett.
Why Ypres I hear you ask? – surely Ypres was the First World War?
When first discussing the plans for the 75th celebrations, particularly the VE Day weekend, the organising committee sought to incorporate and celebrate the 75th anniversary of 41 Club wherever possible and with relevance. Being mindful that without Round Table 41 Club would not exist we wished to acknowledge the sacrifices that were made during the First World War in which the heart of many communities in GB&I and throughout Europe were ripped out by loss. Louis Marchesi served in both WW1 & WW2 and therefore we felt that this acknowledgement would emphasise the changed world which He experienced that must have strongly influenced his ideas and vision for Round Table – this further reinforcing the need for continuing fellowship, friendship and community service throughout not only Europe but the World in these modern times.
The hugely symbolic Last Post ceremony will be the centrepiece of the visit.
The ceremony was prohibited by the German occupation during WW2 only to be restarted when Polish troops liberated Ypres in September 1944 as part of the campaign that eventually secured victory in Europe – the ceremony has taken place every day since then. There will be many activities and further ceremony celebrating VE Day over the weekend in Ypres and surrounding areas.
Although the tone for the weekend will be celebratory Peter, as President, will be laying a wreath in remembrance at the Menin Gate and speaking of ‘the importance of community service and continued international fellowship and friendship’.
